Nimmo Bay has partnered with Sea Wolf Adventures to offer our guest’s the most exclusive and intimate cultural experience possible in our area. With various cultural adventures to choose from, learn about the traditions and history of the local Kwakwaka’wakw people.

Meet your guide:

Mike Willie is originally from the remote village of Kingcome Inlet and is a member of Musgamakw Dzawada’enuxw First Nation. He is a traditional singer and leader of ceremonies and has travelled the waters of the Broughton Archipelago as a route to his homelands for his entire life. Mike has a deep connection to the culture, history and the original land of his ancestors.

The Sea Wolf Cultural experience can be added to a Wilderness and Wildlife Adventure Package or a Heli-Venture Package

Kwakwaka’wakw Historic tour of the U’mista Cultural Centre

Guests find themselves in Alert Bay viewing the old totem pole cemetery and walking through the U’mista Cultural mask centre. Meet local carvers at work and visit their traditional big house.

Gwa’yi Village Experience

This adventure begins with guests cruising on a jet boat up the river to the historic and remote Kingcome Village. There your guide will take you through the second oldest standing big house in Canada and share storytelling and possibly dancing in the new big house. This extraordinary experience brings you to an active isolated community that saved their culture during the banning of the Potlatch (1884 to 1951).  This experience provides you with the chance to meet the local people and really be immersed in their culture.

Yukusam Island Whales and Ancient Cultural Tree Experience

Travel to Hanson Island and hike along an easy- moderate trail to the base camp. Here you’ll learn about the importance of culturally modified forests. Find out about the significance of bark stripped and aboriginally logged trees; these trees are truly living artifacts of the forest! On your way back to Nimmo, keep an eye out for whales as we travel through popular whale viewing waters.

Ancient Villages Experience

Boat to ancient Gwayasdams Gilford Village and explore the shell beaches and the clam gardens. Walk to the oldest standing ceremonial longhouse in Canada, while your guide shares ancient stories that have been passed down from his ancestors. This experience brings you to one of the most historic locations for the Musgamakw Dzawada’enuxw First Nation group.
